El Hierro

El Hierro, like the rest of the Canary Islands, is extremely mountainous. The highest point is right in the centre of the island; Malpaso, which reaches up to 1501 meters. It’s total size is just 278 square metres.
El Hierro is the youngest of the canary islands. At just three million years of age, El Hierro has undergone less erosion than the other islands resulting in a spectacular set of ravines, cliffs and volcanic domes.

El Hierro is well-known for its awesome cliffs (up to 1,200 metres) and breath-taking views. You’ll see fantastic lava formations that contrast with gentle rolling hills at the centre of the island. El Hierro is also well known for its colourful and lush vegetation that can be seen on most parts.

El Hierro has a large population of trees of which some are up to one thousand years old and have been shaped into the most extraordinary shapes by the wind.
Apart from the wide range of sports and outdoor activities you can do in La Hierro, there are plenty of spectacular natural sites to be seen, some excellent cuisine to be sampled and lots of other things to do and see.

One of the most spectacular sites on the island of El Hierro is the enormous El Golfo depression. It’s a broad semi-circle that drops off into the sea from a staggering 700 metres, in places.

The beach areas are also well worth a visit. They’re surrounded by a massive amphitheatre of imposing cliffs that have now been declared a national monument because of their geo-morphological value. Timijiraque, in particular, is fascinating!

An absolute must see is the Ventejis mountain range. It’s located in the north east of the island. Ventejis is stunning and the views are superb. This the site where the Garoe Holy Tree was knocked over by a storm in the XVII century

Frontera Rural is the largest park on the island of El Hierro. There are a huge variety of ecosystems existing here. Some interesting places include; El Julan, where you’ll see some fascinating rock engravings and aboriginal ruins; and La Restinga, the area with the most recent volcanic activity.

Other sites on the island no to be missed include; the El Hierro Craft Centre in Valverde; the Guinea Eco Museum, in Frontera; the Punta Grande Hotel (the smallest hotel in the world!); and the Conservation & Research centre, in Frontera (home to the famous Salmor Lizards and no visit to El Hierro would be complete without visiting the islands most popular inhabitant!).
